![]() ![]() ![]() I barely understood what was happening in the battle climax, and I wish the ending had an additional 10K to flesh out the story. Everything happens in the last 10%, and the final battle isn’t given enough time to breathe. Nothing really happens in the first 30%, but this didn’t bore me as I was engaged by Miles’s first person narration and the world-building.Īs I mentioned, the slow pacing in the beginning didn’t bother me, but the rushed ending did. Surprise romantic elements are always welcome to me, and the adorableness between Tristan and Miles allowed me to forgive any pacing issues.Įvery time Miles swooned internally over Tristan (who’s a little too perfect but I liked it!), I swooned as well. Reading Witchmark, an Edwardian-reminiscent fantasy, produced the exact opposite feeling: unadulterated joy. Okay, you know that feeling when you pick up a romance novel but it turns out that it’s really not a romance novel and the publicity/blurb tricked you? It’s apocalyptic rage. ![]() I was right and wrong: Witchmark does have all those things, but it also has a delightful and unexpected romantic relationship at the heart of the story. I expected a run-of-the-mill fantasy with magical shenanigans, toppling of the elitist status quo, and interesting worldbuilding. ![]() I picked up Witchmark for my SFF book club and read it without any prior knowledge (I didn’t even read the blurb!). ![]()

Her books are an unparalleled example of the craft and skill often to be found on the shelves of genre fiction. However, I am also always quite happy to see her books still ensconced among thrillers and whodunits on my visits to my local bookstore. In fact, I am often surprised during my many rereads that no one (including the publisher) has ever attempted to switch them over to the so-called “literary fiction” category. Although her books are always to be found in the mystery section, they are unlike any other mystery book I’ve ever read. Tana French has been a long-time favorite author for my friend Colleen and me. In tackling the job, the first half of Dr Purkiss's identity has given her an instinctual love of texts and of language, reflected in her own exuberant and often very funny use of words. Its preoccupation is with the manner in which images of English witches have been formed and manipulated during two distinct periods of history, that of Elizabeth and the early Stuarts, and the late twentieth century. ![]() It is a potent combination, and has resulted in a thoroughly individual and very important book. ![]() The dust-jacket of this book defines Diane Purkiss as a Lecturer in English within its pages she prefers to describe herself as a feminist literary critic. ![]() ![]() The continual message of reading is subtly yet notably brought out by the first statement in each story.Īmanda was at her library getting her books for the week.Īmanda was reading her new library book How to Raise a Tiger when her alligator snuck into the roomĪmanda was reading her new library book You Can Make It Yourself: Jet Packs! when she noticed her alligator chewing on her head.īoos, surprises, and tickles, how can kids not respond to these universal themes.
